Rick,
As far as the alternator goes just loosen the belt to a point where it won't
turn. If the whistle goes away youv'e got it. If not, you have eliminated the
alternator and everything else that turns with the belt.

PS you might want to check your intake manifold and carb gaskets when they
leak they sometimes whistle. If all else fails teach it a tune :o) GRIN
