There is a trick to replacing any seal has a shaft going through it. Most
seals will wear a groove in the shaft itself, or at the lease, will polish
the shaft in that area. Simply replacing the seal will NOT necessarily
fix the problem. The new seal must have a prepared surface on which to
seat. This is accomplished by one of two methods:
1: use a very fine crocous cloth of about the same grit used for the
final polish on a crank joural to polish the old area of the shaft. This
should be polished until the entire surface is a matt-dull finish. This
means going INTO the groove, if one is present.
2: lightly clean and polish the shaft in a new area where the old seal
did not ride. When installing the new seal, make sure that it rides in
this newly cleaned/polished area.
IN both cases, use a light coat of oil, of the same type that will be
running on the shaft, on the new surface.
