This is basically what I thought. Sounded like a good reason to look for a
rebuilder who understands and respects 4-bangers.

Generally they have multi-plane crankshafts, but not always. The Lotus V8
used in the Esprit has a flat crank like that in F1 engines. I have not
heard a lot of complaints about vibration, but there are those who think the
exhaust note is "odd".

Just the fact that you have only four cylinders ought to make balance a
higher priority in my estimation.
