Ian,

They're probably not a heavy enough gauge to carry the current
that the pump draws. You might want to put heavier gauge wires
in, depending on what current your current wires can handle.
It could also be that the internal resistance of your wires
is unusually high, but I think that's very unlikely unless
you've used some old scrap wires to hook up your pump.
