My '58 had a stuck collar when I got it.  I used a wrap-around wrench (the kind
that looks like a bike chain) with lots of padding to finally move it.

I remember because I was young & poor at the time (28 years ago) and those
wrenches seemed terribly expensive.  So I went to Sears, bought the wrench,
loosened the collar there in the parking lot and then returned the wrench for a
refund.
