Michael,
I'd strongly recommend installing inserts, the most popular brand being
Helicoil. I use Recoil, an Aussie brand, but they all work the same way.
No one else seemed to have had the problem I experienced, maybe because
I'm ham handed and uncoordinated, which was drilling the stud holes
exactly perpendicular to the trailing arm. These holes, if not drilled
perfectly perpendicular, will allow the studs to be inserted at angles
which makes installation of the brake difficult, if not impossible
without removing them, fitting up the backplate and installing the
studs. I don't recall fitting the hub being a problem for whatever
reason.
Anyway, I feel much more secure cornering at speed with the inserts.
