I'll take a shot at this. Without oil an engine will seize quickly.
Oil by cutting down friction, helps keep the engine cool. Low oil
pressure can be attributed to an engine that has gotten so worn
that the oil that is pumped through the various passages can leak
past the bearing it is there to protect. The oil there cannot work
to its best efficiency. Also because of the low pressure, oil may
not get to all the places it's supposed to. Low oil pressure can
also be attributed to a worn oil pump. The effects the same... no
oil where its needed. At the least moving parts wear more quickly.
At most the engine can seize.
I would still be inclined to purchase a car with a good solid body
despite the low oil pressure. Rebuilding or replacing an engine is
generally cheaper that repairing damaged or badly rusted body
panels. Besides as the man said... "Triumph engines run and run
very well in remarkable states of wear".
