TR6 Oil Pressure -- Crash Course

When I went looking for a TR6, an enthusiast friend told me that oil
pressure was very important but did not explain why.

Can someone give me a crash course in the importance of good oil
pressure readings?  I'm not sure I understand the correlation between
oil pressure and engine wear.  I could see an indication of oil pump
wear, but I don't see direct connection to engine wear.

Just curious.....
