I have not seen a better replacement that will fit. Generally
I've had good luck with just cleaning the brass contacts inside
the bulb socket. (the ones that contact the end of the bulb).
The "ground" connection can be more difficult. The contact that
connects with the metal sleeve of the bulb is easy to clean / reinforce.
But the connection to the metal ring than Dan described is troublsome.
Also where the individual lamp holder "fingers" connect to the lamp
cluster housing can present problems. (has for me)
Being an EMC Engineer, my solution has been to shielding tape.
This is copper tape with conductive adhesive that is used often to
remedy EMI/EMC problems. Works great for a myriad of other repairs
including LBC wiring. A small strip bridging the lamp to the
tail light cluster has worked great. They might deduct concourse
points for this fix tho.. :-O
I expect this tape would be available from an electronic supply
house, but I haven't checked. It's made by 3M and others.
