Mike,
The 4 deg after top dead center is the reading you should get with the vacuum
retart unit hooked up. Without the vacuum retard unit the timing will be
about 4 degrees BTDC. If you do not have your retard unit connected and
operating and set your timing to 4 deg ATDC you will get a poor running
engine.
BTW, the retard unit has vacuum applied only when the carb throttle plates
are fully closed and is disabled when running under load. This is a source
of confusion in that most people expect to see a vacuum advance module on the
distributor (and all of the older TR's have one).
