My son and I are bringing a 70' TR6 back to life. We have
finished the body and most of the electrical. Our current problem
is this: it sound and runs fine at idle, however under a load it
has very little power and backfires on deceleration.
I suspect an igniton/distributor problem. Does anyone out there
have a clue? By the way, how much vacuum should there be on the
vacuum advance line at idle?

All of the things you have done so far sound appropriate, but I
would like to add one little thing for you to check. I had a
similar experience in my Datsun Roadster, tried every cure known
to man (and alien), w/o luck. Finally, in desperation and upon
the advice of a friend, we checked the muffler -- the baffles had
partially collapsed inside and allowed enough exhaust gas to pass
through at idle, but under load it "backed up" and choked off the
motor.
Granted, it is a long shot, but you may want to check the backflow
in any event.
