Your solution is probably quite easy. Remove the starter and service the
engagement mechanism. The is a matter of lubricating with black molly or
other assembly type lube. Do not use oil, as it will not stick around as
long as you would like.

Unfortunately, the end of the mechanism is not that easy to undo for total
disassembly because the parts are usually brazed on. But you can lube it
without taking the assembly off the starter. Just rotate the parts up and
down the shaft and apply grease.

If the gear is totally thrashed you may need to replace the entire unit. If
the problem is a thrashed ring gear on your fly wheel (very possible), you
are in deep dirt. If that is the case, the bad spot can be rotated past the
starter by engaging the transmission and slightly pushing the car (4th gear
is easiest). Then put it back in neutral and attempt to start.

BTW, when ever you work on or around your Spitfire electircal, ALWAYS pull
the plug out the back of the alternator. The voltage regulators inside those
Lucas alternators will perish instantly at the slightest voltage surge or
short circuit somewhere in the system. All it takes is an accedental
dropping of your wrench or screwdriver onto the solenoid or other wire, and
you can plan on spending $98.

Don't forget to disconnnect the battery as well.

Let us know what you find. Feedback to the list helps us all.
