I have a copy of the Triumph Workshop Manual for the Herald,
Vitesse, and Spitfire models, which has a very good index of serial
numbers for chassis, engines, diffs, etc. According to it, the GD...HE
engines were for the Herald 1200 and 12/50, built after February 1968.
The only apparent difference from the Spitfire MkI engine is the
compression ratio, 8.5:1 for the Herald against 9:1 for the Spit.
Since the cam timing and bore/stroke are identical, I assume the
camshaft and crank are the same for both.
It would appear that this is a replacement engine for your Spit!
This manual is available from Victoria British, which I have found
to have the best parts listings for the early Spits. I haven't ordered
anything major from them, but the few minor parts I've gotten have been
at least satisfactory.
