Apparently original 75 spitfire ignition system - dead!

Symptoms:

Key off or out of switch:
Ignition light on.
2 volts measured between batt - and coil +

Key on:
ignition light goes off
2 volts measured between batt - and coil +

Key start (cranking):
6 volts measured between batt - and coil +
no spark from high v coil lead to ground

Coil had been replaced with chrome coil reccomended by TRF.

I'd like to recomend an Allison replacement, but am concerned with lack of
12v at coil +

Is this a normal failure mode?
How should we proceed?

Thanks,
Clark
