Check your alternator drive belt first, if you haven't already. Replace it
if there is any doubt as to its condition. This would account for the sound
and the smell, if you aren't really sure about where the sound is coming
from.
I submit that there are strange acoustical properties about the
under-the-hood areas of these British cars that can make the sound of a
loose belt seem like it is coming from just about anywhere else on the car!
