Steve,

 - The engine compartment color should be the body color.
 - I=E2=80=99ve taken engines out dozens of times and out the bottom is t=
he way to go. I normally take 2 of the front crossmember bolts out and thre=
ad them into the top inside the engine compartment after putting them throu=
gh a link of large chain. Now you have something to lift with. While suppor=
ting the car via this chain and hoist, remove the other 2 crossmember bolts=
. Raise the car up leaving the crossmember (with the wheels still on it) on=
the ground. You=E2=80=99ll need to wiggle it as things are going up to get=
it clear. Once high enough, roll the crossmember out from under the car. N=
ow lower the car back down until the engine rests on an engine dolly. Remov=
e the motor mounts and anything else still attached leaving the transmissio=
n with the engine. Lift the body leaving the engine on the cradle. Roll the=
engine / transmission out the front.
 - I drive my car a lot, usually 3,000 to 5,000 miles per year so I went =
with a non-stock approach. I still have my numbers matching 260 in a baggie=
in my garage but built a very nice 302 for my car. I also installed Dale=
=E2=80=99s 5-speed a couple of years ago. Transformed the car.

This will be a long post, so please bear with me. I've had my Tiger for 20 =
years, but only drove it occasionally. I had constant problems with the wir=
ing and fuel system that left me stranded several times. The last 10 years =
or so, I haven't driven it more than 100 miles per year, mainly due to work=
, health issues, time and the unreliability issue. I plan on going through =
my Tiger this winter, updating the wiring harness and, as a bonus, getting =
it ready to go back to the original paint color (Midnight Blue) throughout =
the car. As part of that, I was going to pull the engine and transmission.
=C2=A0 First question. Is the engine compartment body color or black? My ca=
r was completely repainted, inside and out, in the 70's to some shade of re=
d that now needs serious help. The engine compartment was painted black. I =
figure if I'm going to repaint everything, I might as well do it right.
=C2=A0 Second question. I've heard of people pulling the engine from the to=
p and from the bottom. It's just me, and my bench-pressing days are way beh=
ind me, so I won't be lifting the front of the car myself if I pull from th=
e bottom. I don't see a good place to attach a hoist. I have a 4-post car l=
ift, so can position the front of the car over the edge of the platform, bl=
ock up the frame under the A pillar and chain the rear frame rails down and=
lift the whole car in the air, minus the front crossmember/engine/tranny, =
or remove the transmission, strip the engine to the block and heads and pul=
l from the top. Which would be the best way, and why?
=C2=A0 Last question. As long as the engine/tranny are out, I'm going to "r=
efresh" them. I'm a hot rodder at heart, but don't want to mess up a rare c=
ar like a Tiger. I'm looking for something just to drive and have fun with,=
without getting smoked by a Prius. I'm considering using a roller cam 302 =
and a 5 speed, because of the ZDDP issue, parts availability, reliability, =
small boost in power, etc. How much do I hurt the value of the car by havin=
g the original engine/tranny available but newer stuff installed, vs. rebui=
lding the stock units?

Thanks guys. Looking forward to everyone's input and opinion.

Steve

Steve,

Its a shame you couldn't get it reliable in 20 years...
A full restore is always nice though.
Engine compartment should be body color, my car was Midnight Blue too and i=
f I ever get around to it, I think I may go back to original too.
A 5.0/5speed transforms the car to a modern car. you won't wan to go back.=
=C2=A0 I just have a stock cam Mustang engine but its awesome fast
and loves to cruise=C2=A0 at 80 with good mileage.
I use my 4-post lift to drop the engine/tranny out the bottom, worked slick=

Subject: Re: [Tigers] Engine removal/ paint questions

Steve,
I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people on the list who can answer you=
r questions, but my input is free.
On question 1, when I owned my Tiger it was a one owner all original car, s=
o my response is based on my old car. The engine compartment was body color=
. Entire car was painted body color.
Question 2, IIRC, the engine was mounted to the front suspension and they d=
ropped the car down onto the suspension. I've always read it was easier and=
safer to do the same if you can. Since I never had to remove my engine and=
tranny I'll have to leave this to someone more knowledgeable than me.
Question 3, I haven't noticed if a stock, original Tiger sells for any more=
or less than one with an engine and transmission upgrade as long as all th=
e work looks like it was done at the factory. The best compromise is to sta=
y with bolt-on upgrades only and keep all the original parts and store them=
properly. This way if you ever sell your car and a future owner wants to r=
eturn it to its original configuration they can easily unbolt your modifica=
tions and bolt all the original parts back on the car.
Hope this helps a little.?

This will be a long post, so please bear with me. I've had my Tiger for 20 =
years, but only drove it occasionally. I had constant problems with the wir=
ing and fuel system that left me stranded several times. The last 10 years =
or so, I haven't driven it more
than 100 miles per year, mainly due to work, health issues, time and the u=
nreliability issue. I plan on going through my Tiger this winter, updating =
the wiring harness and, as a bonus, getting it ready to go back to the orig=
inal paint color (Midnight Blue)
throughout the car. As part of that, I was going to pull the engine and tr=
ansmission.<br clear=3D"none">
First question. Is the engine compartment body color or black? My ca=
r was completely repainted, inside and out, in the 70's to some shade of re=
d that now needs serious help. The engine compartment was painted black. I =
figure if I'm going to repaint everything,
I might as well do it right.<br clear=3D"none">
Second question. I've heard of people pulling the engine from the to=
p and from the bottom. It's just me, and my bench-pressing days are way beh=
ind me, so I won't be lifting the front of the car myself if I pull from th=
e bottom. I don't see a good place to
attach a hoist. I have a 4-post car lift, so can position the front of the=
car over the edge of the platform, block up the frame under the A pillar a=
nd chain the rear frame rails down and lift the whole car in the air, minus=
the front crossmember/engine/tranny,
or remove the transmission, strip the engine to the block and heads and pu=
ll from the top. Which would be the best way, and why?<br clear=3D"none">
Last question. As long as the engine/tranny are out, I'm going to "r=
efresh" them. I'm a hot rodder at heart, but don't want to mess up a rare c=
ar like a Tiger. I'm looking for something just to drive and have fun with,=
without getting smoked by a Prius. I'm
considering using a roller cam 302 and a 5 speed, because of the ZDDP issu=
e, parts availability, reliability, small boost in power, etc. How much do =
I hurt the value of the car by having the original engine/tranny available =
but newer stuff installed, vs. rebuilding
the stock units?<br clear=3D"none">

Steve,<br clear=3D"none">
I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people on the list who can answer you=
r questions, but my input is free.<br clear=3D"none">
On question 1, when I owned my Tiger it was a one owner all original car, s=
o my response is based on my old car. The engine compartment was body color=
. Entire car was painted body color.<br clear=3D"none">
Question 2, IIRC, the engine was mounted to the front suspension and they d=
ropped the car down onto the suspension. I've always read it was easier and=
safer to do the same if you can. Since I never had to remove my engine and=
tranny I'll have to leave this
to someone more knowledgeable than me.<br clear=3D"none">
Question 3, I haven't noticed if a stock, original Tiger sells for any more=
or less than one with an engine and transmission upgrade as long as all th=
e work looks like it was done at the factory. The best compromise is to sta=
y with bolt-on upgrades only and
keep all the original parts and store them properly. This way if you ever =
sell your car and a future owner wants to return it to its original configu=
ration they can easily unbolt your modifications and bolt all the original =
parts back on the car.<br clear=3D"none">
Hope this helps a little.?<br clear=3D"none">

rgin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}This will be a long post, so please bear with
me. I've had my Tiger for 20 years, but only drove it occasionally. I had =
constant problems with the wiring and fuel system that left me stranded sev=
eral times. The last 10 years or so, I haven't driven it more than 100 mile=
s per year, mainly due to work,
health issues, time and the unreliability issue. I plan on going through m=
y Tiger this winter, updating the wiring harness and, as a bonus, getting i=
t ready to go back to the original paint color (Midnight Blue) throughout t=
he car. As part of that, I was going
to pull the engine and transmission.?? First question. Is the engine compa=
rtment body color or black? My car was completely repainted, inside and out=
, in the 70's to some shade of red that now needs serious help. The engine =
compartment was painted black. I
figure if I'm going to repaint everything<br clear=3D"none">
, I might as well do it right.? Second question. I've heard of people=
pulling the engine from the top and from the bottom. It's just me, and my =
bench-pressing days are way behind me, so I won't be lifting the front of t=
he car myself if I pull from the bottom.
I don't see a good place to attach a hoist. I have a 4-post car lift, so c=
an position the front of the car over the edge of the platform, block up th=
e frame under the A pillar and chain the rear frame rails down and lift the=
whole car in the air, minus the
front crossmember/engine/tranny, or remove the transmission, strip the eng=
ine to the block and heads and pull from the top. Which would be the best w=
ay, and why?? Last question. As long as the engine/tranny are out, I'm goin=
g to "refresh" them. I'm a hot rodder
at heart, but don't want to mess up a rare car like a Tiger. I'm looking f=
or something just to drive and have fun with, without getting smoked by a P=
rius. I'm considering using a roller cam 302 and a 5 speed, because o<br cl=
