A modest proposal on ignition. My own opinion, for whatever it's worth.

The spark plug arc does not make the engine run "hotter". It has but
one job. To ignite the inducted fuel-air mixture at the proper point in
the cycle. This is the timing, which IS critical to power.

As long as the spark is strong enough to ignite the mixture, and is not
delayed because of too large a gap awaiting a voltage peak large enough
to jump it at the proper time, the gap is not important, nor is it's
orientation.

The key here is that you have a good timing system that is consistent,
and a hot enough charge to the plug., you've got the power.

The proper heat range IS important, so the flowing hot parts don't
ignite the mixture before the spark, or it gets fouled out because of
carbon or oil not getting burned off.

Bottom line: Get a good MSD or such ignition, a good Pertronics, or
such point replacement, good non-cross-firing wiring, and clean plugs or
the proper heat range.
