Chris,

You are one of the few who have pointed out this important performance
advantage over mechanical points. The timing accuracy of mechanical points
is affected, especially at higher rpms, by bearing play and the spring and
mechanical action of the points per se. With electronic timing, there is
very good accuracy, even if the distributor shaft has a lot of play. I
remember around 1980, my friend bought a Unilite for his boat (against my
advice). It failed and he had a long row to shore. Another friend had had
the same experience with a Unilite racing at Willow. At that time the
Unilite had an optical sensor. It's my understanding that they have long
since gone to the more reliable magnetic Hall sensor, but of course I may
be wrong.
