Yes, Frank is right!
I was remebering  ( I said it wa a long time ago) removing the complete
driveshafts which is what the books probably say!
but you don't need to!  The drive shafts can remain in place so no need to
undo the big axle nuts.

On earlier models undo the U-bolts that hold the  rubber X - shaped hardy
spicer at the inner end. of the drive shafts
On some models there is a different type of joint, which the splined drive
shaft should come out of with a sharp tug.  In either case, I think you have
to undo the lower steering swivel and pull the hub outwards to give the
necessary clearance. I never liked having to part the taper joint here so I
used to undo the large nut on the ball joint itself.

I used to rally a mini in the early 70's, taking part in all-night stage
road rallies in Wales. Gave up when the Minis began to be consitently beaten
by the works Escort Mexicos driven by world champions!  I knew when my
skills and budget were beaten!
