Thanks Guy. I was afraid of that although the wheel bearings are very
loose any way so it may be the way to go.

Bill,
Its been a long time but I think you:

Undo the axle nut ( very tight) Then remove roadwheel.
Undo the lower ball joint that act as the steering swivel pin. Then with
the
steering on full lock the splined axle shaft will just pull out of the
rear
of the hub, and then you can remove the drive shaft from the diff.
