The FAA, as you probably all know or can guess has a rule for everything. Most are conservative. Their rule on reusing self locking nuts is that if you can thread them on by hand don't reuse them. They also say that at least three full threads must be showing after the nut is fully tightened (new or old). I like the stainless steel self locking nuts myself.
