Tommy,
You are thinking of the Powerglide (cast iron and alumin housing used in
Chevs)and its variant the Super Turbine 300 (used in Pontiac, Olds and
Buicks). Those are all killer trannies. The 200 came out in 77. It was
manufactured cheap (that was the idea). It bit GM back, for they lost a
class action suit with car owners who had to have them replaced. Usually
they had to be replaced before the front brake pads....man they were a mess
to get to work even after a rebuild. You can identify one very quickly by
the bottom of the pan. It says "METRIC" stamped in the pan in big letters
and does not have a modulater. On the inside, they went from cast/ machined
clutch drums to stamped/welded ones. Bad idea then, but its the industry
standard now. P-gile, 350, 400, 700R4 good...200bad!
Thanks,
Jaybird

Best to respond off list
The TH200 is a 2 speed automatic transmission available from 1955 to 1968
The tranny was not a piece of junk and is still the preferred automatic for
drag
racers
(especially those on a budget because you can find these trannies
everywhere)
The TH350 came into being in 1967 but was not popular until 1969
The TH200 was not available after 1968
Fond memories of my 1967 Firebird with the Ram Air package on a 400 CID V8
w/
TH200
The car would smoke the tires out of the hole and bark 'em at 60 when it
changed
into high gear
