U-joint grease fittings

Does anyone have an older Spit with grease fittings on the U-joint spiders?
I discovered these on my MK2 and am wondering what to put in them.  The book
I have says, "the proper oil"  which is not very helpful.  But it raises the
question, would these indeed take oil or just plain old grease from the
grease gun?
