Pulsing lights were the least of my worries. One evening, I was tooling
around with the lights and radio on. As I approached an intersection to
turn left, I came to a stop in the left turn lane as I hit my turn signal.
The car sputtered and died. I had to turn everything off (lights, radio)
before the car would start. This happened several time in order to convince
me that it was time to upgrade.

Huge size of the Delco? My new Delco is the same length and only 3/4 inch
wider than the Lucas. I really didn't get the impression that the Delco was
grossly oversized. Maybe because my Spit's alternator is for the later
years and may be already larger than for the early Spits and GT-6s.

Thanks again or your and Paul's help in this (and others) area.

Interesting comment, in that I chose to stick with a stock generator for my
Mk3, for among other reasons, the aesthetics, which I know is a silly
reason,
but the massive Delco generators almost dwarf the engine and I don't care
for
the way they dominate the engine compartment. Do you have any specific
Japanese brands or model numbers? I've decided that when my rebuilt
generator
and NOS control box goes (and it might be years from now), that I'll fit an
alternator. But for now, I have no problems with pulsing lights or any of
that other stuff that I always see people referencing in their decision to
go
with alternators.

Best wishes,

Jeff

I too did a Delco upgrade years ago. In fact, I'm one of the folks that
helped Paul when he did his.

Anyhow, should my Delco give up the ghost and require replacement, I
may switch to the Japanese alternators instead. They are much more
compact. They also cost about the same, have around the same amperage
capacity, and wire up the same.

Getting away from the huge size of a Delco alternator would be a nice
  thing imo.
