James,
Just one possible suggestion - fuel tank venting. Somewhere (don't know
where, but there must be some listers who do) there should be a vent to let
air into the petrol tank as the petrol is removed. If this gets blocked a
vacuum will develop in the tank, until it gets so strong that the fuel pump
can no longer pump fuel against the vacuum. Then your engine dies. Five
minutes later the car springs back to life as if nothing was ever wrong.
I had this problem with my Uno for a while, until my father suggested I
remove the seal on the fuel cap. Problem disappeared (the seal goes back on
5 miles before the MOT station once a year!).
Not sure how this could explain your fast idle problem - possibly unrelated.
Just one of, no doubt, a number of potential problems, but it is all I can
think of off-hand.
