I believe it is a Whitworth nut.  If my limited knowledge is correct, Whitworth 
sizes are a thread specification and the a/f dimensions of the nut are derived 
from that.

Whitworth spanners are strange and incompatable with anything other than 
whitworth nuts/bolts.
