Hold on for one minute!  Before you go recutting those grooves, Why not leave 
the deck flat so you can use one of Mordy Dunst's copper
head gaskets!  Alternatively, you can use a stock Mk3 head gasket.  There 
really is no advantage to recutting that groove.
