Phil/David,

There are loads of products on the market which will remove crap from
radiators.  But one thing you should be careful of (happened to me - but
not on a Spit).  As cooling systems age, bits of them disintegrate over
time.  Simultaneously, bits of limescale deposit themselves on the
inside of the cooling system.  Sometimes, the limescale will deposit
itself very nicely so that it blocks a hole where part of the original
system has corroded.  Once you flush almost any cleaner through the
system, the limescale will be removed - opening up the hole which you
never knew existed.  So be prepared to check for leaks and replace a
couple of parts afterwards.
