Just to let you know I have got the Spitfire on the road again.
This time 6 gear ratios to choose from.
3rd overdrive is excelent for long corners going up hill from a 30 zone,
5000rpm, and flick it in. It saves chainging to 4th which would upset the
rear suspension.
Noticed more bearing noise from the overdrive than the non overdrive box,
goes when in overdrive so I suppose it's the clutch thrust bearing.
60 mph and 2600 rpm.
I then washed the car which reconfirmed the mental list of rust holes and
decay. I then considered selling it, but then I went for a longish drive
and totaly forgot about getting rid of it.
I also back flushed the cooling system today in a hope that the exhaust down
tube gasket wouldn't blow as much, got a reasonable amount of gunk out but
not as much I had expected. Suppose next I try ducting the air better, need
to do that for unleaded.
Had to put about 1L of fluid through the clutch to get it blead. Well I put
400cc thruough twice, and have left 200 to bleed it through later. I'll
leave it about a week then bleed that lot through. I have found taking out
the clamp from the slave and ramming it forwards while you bleed it realy
helps. I was using a one way bleed tube, but do people find the reverse
flush type worke better with the clutch. I actualy considered taking the
whole lot out the car streightening so the bleed nipple is right at the top.
Only trouble is where I got the propshaft shortened I have managed to pick
up some vibration, suppose I will have to have it shortened. Anyone know of
a good place to get this done neer Oxford?
