Funny, I was just considering the same thing due to
the recent demise of my head gasket on the Spitfire.
I'm thinking of flushing the system out with a hose
pipe to get the loose stuff out. Then I was thinking
about using some of that 'Hammerite Rust Remover' that
you mix with water and soak parts in to derust
overnight. I was planning to fill the cooling system
with this, and leave for about 24 hours, and then
reflush. Having tried the stuff on a spare waterpump,
I was impressed with the results. I contacted the
manufacturers about possible harm to hoses and other
metals, and they claimed that it would not harm them.
So this weekend I'll be replacing the head gasket and
having a go with the stuff and I'll let you know what
the results are like.
