Have had almost the same setup in my car.

Run the fan driect from the battery, put in a fuse and a relay, the coil of
which should be wired in serise with earth, switch, relay and ignition wire.
Switch can be but in serise with an accesory thermostat set between 1/2 and
3/4 edging towards 3/4.

Do a real good cooling system flush with the descailer stuff.

You can then loose the engin driven fan for a bit, try it I did. Your
needel with the heater on will stay at 1/2 in anything but heavy traffic, it
will then creap up and your fan will cut in for a bit and go off
surprisingly quickly. With the heater off, it will stay slightly above 1/2
which is the point at which your thermostat is fully open. Remember the
warmer your engin the healthyer it stays.

Oh and the silence, the extra responce, the fule economy!
