Guessing here, but perhaps the battery sulfated, the plates touched/shorted
and caused internal short.
If the battery was not vented adequately, vents plugged, etc., it could
have pressurized and exploded.
I use desulfating trickle chargers/battery tenders on all of my lead acid
batteries in hopes to extend the battery life and hopefully to prevent this
scenario.
Again, though, just guessing here.
