Gerry,

You could test that idea pretty easily.  When you are expecting an extreme in
the weather, check on the car to see if it locked itself.  If it did, 
go in and remove
the fuse to the electrical locks, or the remote entry system.  Then 
see if it locks
itself again.  If so, then your idea about it being mechanical is a 
good one.  If
it doesn't lock with the fuse pulled then it's electrical.
