I've seen a lot of different setups at the track. Some are modified
auto/motorcycle mufflers, some have a muffler or pipe with a tire tube over the
outlet, a few exhaust into big fabbed boxes (like a really big muffler, I
guess). It seems like the quietest are the ones that have multiple layers of
quieting (auto muffler into big box, etc.) People sleep near and among these
things in tents, so quieter is always better. Overly loud generators have been
known to spontaneously get up and walk off into the nearest dumpster or lake
after having been violently divested of important parts some nights, so it's in
the owner's best interest to quiet it as thoroughly as possible.
one thing I noticed that makes a lot of sense when you think about it is
muffling the generator itself (both the engine and the generator head), not
just the exhaust. I was surprised how much noise comes from the unit itself.
Maybe the most popular (and probably cheapest) thing I've seen is just building
a box from sheet stock around the thing. A lot of guys even use cardboard
boxes. And when I say 'build' a lot of times that just means 'lean the sheets
against each other in a rough box shape'. The level of quieting varies, of
course, but I'm surprised at the effect they get out of it. So something
permanent (or semi-permanent) using a muffler and unit-containment should get
you to dang near silenced. I know I'm planning to put mine in a separate
building with sound-deadening and mufflers. I expect it to be completely
un-noticeable from the outside, especially since the building is on the outside
edge of my property and closer to the neighbor's house than mine.
