In our previous house I installed a Sears unit onto our forced hot air
furnance. A trough of water with a mesh wheel that rotated through the trough.
A fan would draw air in then send the humidified air back out into the main
duct.
I found the maintainace to be a pain. It would get encrusted with mineral
deposits. There was an option to make the unit flush fresh water through the
system whenever it ran (controlled by a humidistat). The premise was to lower
the build up of minerals. I could not use that option as there was no drain
nearby to handle to run off.
Other than the above, the unit did work well. We could feel the effect of
having humididfied air and it did seem to make the house more comfortable.
The only other advice to consider is how the unit mounts. The unit I used
mounted on the side of the main duct above the furnance (i.e it was
cantilevered off a vertical part of the ducting). Our HVAC repair man didn't
like the idea of having it positioned such that if it flooded it could send
water into the furnace (oil fired). He would have preferred a unit that mounted
below a horizontal run of duct work.
I never had a problem with it flooding...
