The problem with the swamp cooler type is that any minerals in the water
wind up staying behind on the mesh, at least for the types I've seen.
Depending on your water, and how much humidification you need, you may have
to change pads every couple of months. I suppose if it really worked like a
swamp cooler, where the mesh is kept flooded and the water in the pan is
periodically drained off to hold down mineral buildup, it might be OK.

I put a "semi-direct injection" unit in my parents house some years ago, we
were all quite pleased with it. It had a float valve that filled a pan, and
then a slinger that sucked water from the pan and threw it against a screen
to vaporize it. Worked very well with no attention at all as long as they
lived there, which was about 5 years. Unfortunately, that variety doesn't
seem to be available any more. I'm planning to install a direct injection
unit in my current house RealSoonNow.
