Several of you expresses an interest in the $400 Enco Mill-Drill I was to
pick up Saturday. When I finally went to pick it up, it was in good shape,
but the tooling was something short of "plenty"> There was a 2" 4-bit
surfacing tool, a $40 clamping kit, and a few end-mills (allegedly). It was
a belt-drive, non-tilt unit, 8x23 table. And the price had gone up to
something over $600. I declined to bid it higher, after he turned down
$475.
Anyway, when I got home, I checked Enco's website. The same machine, with
slightly better specs, goes for $895 every day. But they also had a
105-1145 geared-head, tilting unit on sale for $995 (reg $1195). That
looks like the best deal out there. Of course, I'd have to add another $200
to get enough tooling to use it. It did not look like the new one even
came with a drill chuck.
Now, I need to decide (A) if I will use the machine enough to justify
the expense, and (B) I've been putting off spending a similar amount on a
rebuilt rotary for the Mazda racecar. I probably should do that first.
But likely, I'll do both ;)
