I think that's because the typical service jack does not have the adapter to
accommodate the pinch-weld. Without it it bends over.  But I've had a number
of cars with factory scissor jacks that only fit the pinch-weld.  That
rocker-box area is one of the strongest parts of a unibody car.

I think the ideal adapter would be a hard plastic puck to set inside the
jack cup, with a slot to fit the pinch-weld.   In fact, I'll probably have
to make one now ;)
