Something I did not mention before was that, at 3000 RPM in the driveway, b=
oth SU carb pistons flutter rapidly up and down. Might this suggest a stick=
ing valve or two? The car is fresh out of winter storage.
Shafts are snug, fortunately, and they pass the propane (Bernz-torch) test=
. Inspired by Barney Gaylord=E2=80=99s discussions on SU rebuilding, I got=
the reamer he suggested and did a couple for another very-worn car, using b=
ushings and new standard-size shafts. Performance improvement was astoundi=
ng. Owner reported that he could climb hills easily in fourth speed, hills t=
hat he had before struggled with in third. =20

When reassembling the waterpump I made a newbie error. I got in=
a hurry and left out two bolts, some of the bolts that hold the pump body t=
o the head. The coolant leak is through one of those bolt holes. The threade=
d hole drilling entered the head's water jacket and of course, leaks.<o:p></=
o:p></p></div><div><p class=3D"MsoNormal" style=3D"mso-margin-top-alt:auto;m=
so-margin-bottom-alt:auto"> I now have new bolts and I will appl=
y sealant to the threads and place fiber sealing washers under the bolt head=
s. Doing so hopefully completes the engine rebuild. I can then get back to r=
