HIF is a variety of SU - it replaced the HS models. HIF stands for
Horizontal Integrated Float - it means that the float chamber is built
into the base of the carb rather than being separate (so it's not
affected by the car accelarating or slowing down changing the level of
fuel in the jet). And there may be something about the jets not being
so easily adjustable on the HIFs (the phrase Waxstat jets springs
vaguely to mind), presumably to stop customers or their mechanics
mucking around with them and spoiling the emissions - but I'm not an
expert on this, so I'm hoping someone else will chime in! For a '79
car, UK-spec models would have had HIF.
