Or even a large hammer, with a block of wood, if it's stubborn. Basically,
you can whack it as hard as you like up to the point you crush the bell --
that would be hitting it too hard <g>.
I should add, dismounting it and setting it on a hard surface will be more
effective than tapping at it in the vehicle.
