On the '71 the motor was reigned in by a set of L brackets on the motor
mounts.  They should be bolted to the engine side of the rubber and about
1/2 inch clear of the back side of the rubber.  In a situation such as yours
and the engine starts moving forward these brackets will hit the body
portion of the motor mount and stop the engine from moving farther forward.
