Many transmissions are lubricated by the input shaft turning
the counter gear when the engine is turning and throwing oil
around.  The input shaft and counter gear are turning and
throwing oil even when the car is in neutral.  If the engine
is NOT running there's no oil being thrown around and thus
no lubrication to the output shaft which is turning with the
rear wheels on the ground.  Hence you disconnect the drive
shaft to save the transmission's rear bearings from burning
up.

I've  heard of people years ago shutting off the engine
while coasting down mountains to save gas and burning up the
transmission bearings.  I never heard of it directly from
someone who had it happened.  It's just one of those "They
say ..."
