A fair question and I'll try to answer it quickly and correctly so as not to
draw the attention of some of the other longtime listers. This topic has
produced some loooong threads here in the past.
The MG gearboxes are so constructed that when the layshaft (input shaft) is
not turning (in this case because the engine is not running) the gearbox
does not circulate oil. On a long trip, like Virginia to Texas, there is a
good chance of burning up the gearbox.
