OK guys, the list is harmonious and almost unanimous in it response to
the question (a nice change from some past 'debates').
Today I went out and bought a thermostat and a new thermostat housing
and this will be a little job for me on the weekend.
The old housing was badly corroded internally (including up in the bolt
holes) so it seems that previous owners used a lot of the 'orrible South
Australian water instead of straight coolant. I wonder what the
'innards' looks like. The rest of the cooling system should be fine as
the radiator is not that old and only recently had a new baffle
installed that improved its efficiency incredibly.
This was purely a thermostat problem with the clogged device just
wedging shut and preventing (sufficient) water to get through when it
was required. An old one, but a lovely device it was, too (made in
Germany) - I might give it a thorough clean and test it to see if I can
keep it as an emergency spare (says he who rarely parts with
ANYTHING:-).
Thanks again all.
