If my memory is correct, the MGB manual recommends leaving a little air space
in the top of the radiator. However, if you're not going to check your level
almost daily during the hot months you will lose a decent amount of coolant
and end up with potential overheating. I have found the container a
brainless way to make sure that doesn't happen and keep your temperature
under control.
Further, it needs not be pressurized to return to the radiator. The vacuum
created in the cooling radiator sucks back in as much coolant as the radiator
can hold.
