Always read the instructions first. I just realized that my submission
didn't make the list because the reply function didn't send it to the
correct address. So this message is a little out of date, but I will
re-send it, along with some additional information:
Regarding the Road America schedule:
1) The Victoria British event is not listed on the official Road
America flyer. =20
2) Joe Marchetti did not get a contract with RA for the Chicago
Historics this year, but VSCDA races will be held that weekend (July 18-20),
and we were told that the same groups would be run this year as last,
including Can-Ams, and Shelby Americans in addition. (The Can-Am event last
year was truly fantastic!!!) Word is that Marchetti is planning something
for the same weekend, but at Grattan or the new Gingerman track, but neither
of these has facilities comparable to RA for a large event.
3) VSCDA races will also be held September 19-21
4) Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs has the track August
23-24 and will run Vintage/Historics in addition to other groups. There are
several MGBs and Midgets that run in MC events- some run in Vintage and some
in other classes.
If anyone in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Indiana area wants to start
racing, Midwestern Council has drivers schools at Blackhawk Farms on April
19-20, June 7-8, and September 20-21. Auto Week correctly calls this a
little gem of a track. Call the MC hotline at 847-359-0204 for information
on necessary equipment and the physical exam required.
Regarding the Chicago British Car Festival:
This will be held September 7 at Oakton Community College, as usual.
New this year is that British bikes (as in motor-bikes) will be invited
also. This is another of those shows that, in regard to the number and
quality of cars that show up, is better every year. The swap-meet portion
can be disappointing if you are looking for good or rebuildable used parts.
Regarding an introduction:
I have been lurking on this list for a while now, but don't
anticipate often finding time enough to contribute- maybe after we replace
the dinosaur that we have at home, which is not even adequate for e-mail.
My husband Jake and I rely entirely on MGBs for transportation here in
northern Illinois. Yes, where it can be -20=B0 F when it's time to leave=
for
work in the morning and maybe as low as -13=B0F when you're ready to return
home in the evening. Jake has maintained them himself for more years than I
would like to admit to, and the last few I have been his apprentice. We
currently have a 71 roadster and a 72 GT on the road, but have our share
(maybe more) of project cars. We are personal friends of Barney, through
the Chicagoland MG Club. (Will you admit to that, Barney, or should I have
checked with you first?) I was tempted to respond to the smogging thread:
our roadster was recently due for its emissions screening, so Jake stopped
at the test facility one day, a spur-of-the-moment thing, when he had some
other business nearby. It sailed through without any re-tuning - and this
is a very spirited, good runner. I am not sure how standards in IL compare
with those in CA, but a B that is tuned properly should be able to meet the
standards for its year of production. (Respectfully submitted)
One last thing for now: our daughter, who learned to drive on the 71
roadster, is currently a student in Fairbanks. Up there she drives a 4wd
pick-up truck, but she has seen a few Bs and Midgets around Fairbanks. I
suggested to Barney that he contact her regarding road conditions there and
in western Canada. Anyone else who is planning on the trip to Alaska can
contact me for her e-mail address. We won't be able to make it this year,
but might try it in '99 after the NAMGBR convention in Vancouver.
