My initial thought was a loose fan belt, but when the noise became
continuous it was apparent that it was related to car speed and not
engine speed, so that eliminated the
loose belt theory.

Is the squeak present when the car is stationary and the engine
running? It's implied by the above, but not clear. If the squeak is
indeed present when the car is stationary, then it could be the fan
belt. However, if you drive the car, shift to neutral, switch off and
coast, and the squeak is still there, then it's the running gear. In
that instance it could be a wheel bearing even though there's grease.
