John,
The screws in question are a 4BA X 9mm screw. There is enough depth to
the hole to go with a 12mm length, but you would be working with few
good threads at the bottom of the hole and that would make it rather
iffy. If you want to give that a try, you may be able to find 4BA x
12mm screws at either of the two outfits linked below:
BRITISH TOOLS AND FASTENERS
<http://www.mrcybermall.com/machine_tool_parts/index.html> (located in
California)
Uni-Thread (British thread helicoils) <http://www.uni-thread.com/>
(located in England and the best bet for finding what you need)
I would suggest that if you do this, you also use a Loctite product
called Form-A-Thread (P/N 28654) to restore the threads on the upper
portion of the hole. In fact this may be an alternative with the
original screws if their threads are good (if the threads are not good
the original screws may be available from Moss or Victoria British
listed with the later SU fuel pumps for the MGBs). The Form-A-Thread
should be available from good auto parts stores (not Shucks, Kragen,
etc. - these are only good fro sales on oil), or from the Eastwood catalog.
A couple other options would be 1) helicoil the hole (helicoil available
from Uni-Thread). This may not be a good option as the material in the
area of these screws is rather thin and may not be thick enough to
support a helicoil. 2) Drill and tap the hole for a 8-32 standard
American machine screw. This is just a bit larger than the 4BA screw
and works well as a replacement. Just watch the head height if you do
this, it may be necessary to grind the head down somewhat so it doesn't
interfere with the distributor cap.
Good luck,
Dave
