Francis:

The two machine screw holes on the manifold side are drilled
through into the water jackets.  The two on the spark plug side
pass through into the head bolt stud drilling.  You may be
confusing water pump lubricant of the anti freeze in the holes
for oil.  It could also be possible that there is a little oil in
the antifreeze.

The pressurized oil in the head comes from the copper line at the
back, goes up inside the rear rocker pedestal and down the inside
of the hollow rocker shaft.  All other oil in the head is
un-pressureized gravity return oil from the head.
